<HTML>Quite a bit so far, he finds fault with some of her arguments.... here's a short bit from the book....

<i>Ultimately, Maria's theories may take second place to the example set by her dedication and independence. This, too, is what she would like to be remembered for, as she told me: "I am happy to think that I have proved to the world that a woman without the help of any man can achieve proper scientific results, without being used for the menial and dull tasks."</i>
(page 89 - paperback second edition)

She was considered a witch and a crazy woman by the locals when she first started... however her devotion to and protection of the lines began to win her some respect .... this grew into a hero worship as tourists began to visit the lines (and bring much needed monies into the area) and as her reputation grew world-wide... until she became known as Santa Maria.

Interestingly .... the trident may be a realtively modern addition to the site .... it's construction is not like the others...
