Proper channels? Strange concept. Isn't that awfully subjective a concept?

That's an exaggeration of the situation. My wife comes to me with the classic symptoms of gall-bladder disease (I ramble them all off and she nods that's exactly what she feels), if this was NOT health-related, don't you think she'd take my assessment of the situation even though I'm not "qualified" in a given field?

No one's life depends on this information. Thus, the bar ought to be moved accordingly.

How does that speculation become true when you just said above that background information IS checked/wanted beforehand? Evidence IS majority rule most of the time. Nothing more than that. Same way it's socially acceptable to mow a pedestrian down while talking on a car-phone but if one were speeding, it'd be a far different situation. My point is cultural/political influences are usually greater than the empirical evidence.

I need not offer proof since all I stated was a theory as well as what I would do based on my goal of meeting with another planet's culture.
