Well it might not be such a mystery. The inscription mentions that the party had come from the north. Also the inscription on the side reads " There are 10 men by the inland sea to look after our ships fourteen days journey from this peninsula (or island). Year 1362." The "inland sea" might refer to Lake Winnepeg 250 miles to the north.

Looking at a map, Kensington is about 35 miles east of the Red River which forms the border between Minnesota and North Dakota. The Red River flows north into Lake Winnepeg and Lake Winnepeg empties into the Nelson River which flows into Hudson Bay. Now why is Hudson Bay significant? [www.therightperspective.org]
