The "quote" is Semir Osmanagich's strawman version of the archaeological consensus. But here is what
really happened, according to the intrepid Osmanagich:
"In the 9th century something occurs which is an enigma for historians and archeologists. One after another all leading centers of the Maya are abandoned. There is no evidence of destruction in war, of battles, diseases, fires, or natural cataclysms. It is as if these cities were simply abandoned overnight, on command, without disorder or chaos. The farmers from outside the towns were left baffled. There were no leaders left. The cosmic civilization of the Maya had simply and mysteriously vanished. / Their mission on our Planet had been accomplished."
