I have seen the statement about Mississippian cultures being influenced by Mexican (I forget where) but there was a convincing (to me) rebuttal that these were not direct influences. The paper I read said that there was more of an influence in the Pueblo cultures and that "East of the Mississippi" cultures had some similarities but they weren't convincing ones.
