My main feeling (and it's nothing more than that) is that the unadorned story of council of magistrates, meeting together 15 years after the fall of Rome, inviting Saxons in as foederati, rebellion over a failure to provide due payment all ring true in the historical context where a united Britannia at peace for fifty years under a high king does not.
