This link has quite a bit of info on the spheres.

Several years ago there was a TV program on the spheres. A couple of Gringos attempted to make one about 30" in diameter. After beating on the rock for a couple of days one mashed his finger and they decided to hire a local to do the shaping. That fellow made a square frame to fit over the rock so he could check the diameter and within a couple of days had a respectable sphere.
The second part of the program was searching for the source rock. They traveled up into the hills and found several boulders and even found one where work had been started but abandoned because of a flaw in the rock.
The last part of the program used a laser to measure one of the large spheres that had been moved to a park. It was not perfectly spherical but pretty close.
About the only mystery here is why a culture whose people obviously had too much time on their hands decided to pound on boulders to make them spherical.
