<HTML>If the Egyptians were trying to copy the heavens with the pyramids surely they would have made a better job of it, the alignment isn't as absolute as you might expect from such a skilled building nation.
-------------

Adam,

I agree with you. That's why I took a closer look at the OCT. I believed that it wasn't the Egyptians who measured wrong -- it was us.

Have you seen the pictures? By your post, I must believe that you have not. I'm not matching pyramids. I'm matching the out-lying Mortuary temples.

FYI: The match appears mind-blowingly accurate. When the first and last star are placed squarely dead-center within their corrisponding temples, the middle star is out of perfect central alignment (slightly further north of center) with the mid-pont of the middle temple by a matter of a few feet. Each star sits completely inside the walls of the structure (a much smaller target than a pyramid I might add).

However, even the apparent slight north offset of the middle star may be explained by reference to other structures and I will be providing a possible explanation as to why the middle star is not aligned perfectly (though even this is well beyond what we might expect from a pre-optical telescope civilization).

One of my pictures shows the explaination I am positing to explain this offset (in fact, it was because of this slight offset that I hesitated to bring details regarding this "discovery" forward until now). My preliminary results indicate that the causways lead toward the exact intersection point with each star.

---------------
Any relationship is only chance I reckon.
----------------

Well neither of us are statisticians and you seem not to have even seen the observable evidence. I don't think you're in a position to provide even a preliminary accessment.

---------------
If there were only two stars in Orions belt and only two pyramids I'm sure I coud find a perfect match, (obviously I'd have to use some pretty great hardware (a Spectrum 48K might just do it?).
---------------

Well of couse you could find a match for two points - and you wouldn't need any equipment at all.

Any two structures can always be matched to any two points. The *minimum* number of points required to establish any astronomical correlation is three.

Fortunately, Orion's belt is unequally spaced and unevenly aranged. Because one star is closer to the mid-star than the other, and because a precise triangle is established by the three points, this shape, if found on the ground, becomes progressivly less likely to have emerged due to chance the more closely it corrisponds.

The accuracy of the mortuary temple-based correlation appears to have achieved nearly pin-point accuracy. Exactly what I would expect from the gifted astronomers of Ancient Egypt.

--------------
Oh, and why just line up the three pyramids and none of the rest?
---------------

First, it's the temples - not the pyramids. The pyramids APPEAR to match orion's belt because they are buttressed flush with the Mortuary Temples. Thus, the perfect alignment of the temples produces an imperfect but suggestive alignment of the pyramids.

Second, this is not an appropriate question at this time. We simply don't know why the Egyptians did this - if in fact they did. First, we must establish if they did by statistical analysis.
