Actually, I don't. I'm echoing the words of anthropologists who work in the field with these people (and know about their religion)... including work with people who have rejected the Christian faith and kept a form of their original beliefs.
And (picky anthropological point) they're not a race. They're a culture.
The existing books (Popul Vuh and others) don't give a connection with concepts like 'fifth sun' and 2012. Nor do any of the inscriptions on temples and so forth.

Uhm... the graphics from the album are George sitting in a field with gnomes. I bought that one when it first came out, and it's sitting on my shelf, yonder. Looks just like this:

I don't know where THOSE covers came from, but they aren't ones that George approved or wanted. A subsequent release (remastered) colorized the picture, but didn't have new artwork. Speaking as an ol' Beatlemaniac, who was there for the original Fab Four invasion (and heard them in Germany before they hit the states), the art there is just jarringly out of place with the Beatles' philosophy, approach, and art tastes.
