<HTML>Contemporary Approaches to Archaeological Fieldwork: Theory vs Practice,
Democracy vs Hierarchy
A conference to take place in York on Saturday, 29th September, 2001
Apologies for cross-posting
Recent developments in archaeological theory pose questions about the ways
in which archaeologists collect, organise and analyse their material, in
particular the structuring of personnel and data employed to achieve these
ends. As announced previously on this discussion list, this meeting has
been designed to explore aspects of the hierarchies employed in
archaeological fieldwork, both in terms of recording and analytical
procedures and the people who implement them.
The programme is as follows:

10:20 - Chair for morning session: Steve Roskams, University of York
10:30. What have the post-processualists ever done for us? Towards an

Introduction to the Archaeology Data Service
In addition to the above meeting of the Interpreting Stratigraphy Group,
we have organised an introduction to work of the Archaeology Data Service
on the preceding day, Friday 28th September. The ADS exists to collect,
describe, catalogue, preserve, and provide user support for digital
resources created through archaeological research, and has a
responsibility for promoting standards and guidelines for best practice
across the Arts and Humanities Data Service as a whole (see
[
ads.ahds.ac.uk] for more details). This optional, day-long workshop
will outline the work of the ADS and generate discussion as to how these
activities can be further developed.
Conference Booking
If you wish to attend the Interpreting Stratigraphy Conference, the fee is
£10.00. Price includes tea / coffee but not lunch (reasonably priced food
is available at a variety of pubs and restaurants close to Kings Manor).
The Introduction to the work of the Archaeology Data Service is free of
charge but please indicate in your return whether you are intending to
come to both events, or just the Saturday conference. Make cheques
payable to The University of York and send them, by 10th September, to:
