There are several different species of crop bananas. The first bananas to reach Africa are of the Indonesian species that are used for cooking while green- these are treated just like potatos very important crop- and these reached Ethiopia about five thousand years ago. I will find a refernce for this. The bananas that we like to eat as a dessert fruit did not reach Egypt until much later but these are very different plants. Austranesians from Indonesia brought the same banana to Madagascar.
