If I may add ... this wasn't just a universal Mesoamerican practice ... both the mound/temples in South America and North America were also rebuilt in this manner.. in the early Andean cultures not only was the previous mound/temple buried but a dedicatory cache of items were sealed with it. When (for example) Caral was abandoned they buried the mounds completely in a covering of dirt and small rocks.
