Sadly no, its not surprising at all. This isn't about the science itself though, which can't be un-discovered, rather its about the use to which we put it and who we leave in charge of it.

How can the ongoing field tests in the UK be allowed to carry on now that this is out in the open? One of the most disturbing of GM ideas is that of the terminator gene, the one that prevents a crop producing fertile seeds. If that gets loose into the environment then.....
