False. 500-800 are the European Dark Ages - so called because of the scarcity of surviving records which was in turn due directly to the conflict caused by large scale immigration of Teutonic tribes into the former empire. If I recall correctly the Roman Empire officially ended sometime in the mid four hundreds. The Christian Church was at this time riven by assorted doctrinal disputes and heresies and far to divided to 'supress' anything. Not to mention the fact that the monasteries were practically the only organizations maintaining literacy in the West. In *FACT* the Catholic Church was the foremost patron of learning in the West throughout the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Copernicus and Galileo's problems were directly due to the Church's strong commitment to Aristotelian science rather than a resistance to science as such.
