And to quell some curiosities...
The tripods and rigs are exactly as Francis speculated (and I had actually previously stated) ... solely for control of the blocks and safety.
The real machine is hidden from view, also as Francis speculated.
Ed really wasn't all that adverse to working in the public light. His system was so far "outside the box" that he could perform his "magic" right in front of you, and you wouldn't realize the machine was doing the work for him.
We see things as we are, not as they are.
