Please remember that Hancock began his career as a newspaper reporter. "Sign and the Seal" and "Fingerprints" are examples of the decent if unspectacular journalism of today, though they be faulty history.
I am a trained journalist, and I can tell you that in journalism school Hancock's "View From the Trenches" would be about par for the course. It is sad that this is how journalism is done, but it is nothing new; standards have been falling since the Watergate reporting of the 1970s. (Just look at "Dateline" or "20/20.")
