<HTML>According to the satellite shot, the angle of the Trial Passages appears to be right in line with the satellite pyramids, and not far off from Khufu's pyramid proper. Of course, since it was built after Khufu's pyramid, that would hardly be a difficult task.

The red box shows the approximate alignment to the cardinal points. At the center of the red box are the two openings of the Trial passages (the two black squares).

I'm going to have a look for more detailed info. I hope your search of M&R turns up something a little more concrete. (Or limestone...let's not bring Davidovits into this..lol)

In thinking it over... we may <i>both</I> be right. Originally planned as a subsidiary (but NOT a satellite!) pyramid, the trenche downward was cut. It was then realized that it was in the way. Rather than waste the tunnel, though... they found the exact spot where it would bisect the tunnel they had already dug, and cut down into the ground to make a duplicate of the interior... <i>so that they could have a testing facility</i>. That would explain the location and orientation.

However... it is most definitely NOT in line with the other subsidiary pyramids. Their centerlines/passages are several meters west of the Trial Passages. That doesn't jibe. I'm falling back on the TP's as testing facilities only unless I hear a plausible explanation for the offset.
