Why weren't they carried in a harness? Probably for the simple reason that there wasn't a single material on the planet that had the tensile strength necessary to perform the task. Or another simple experiment. Try rigging up a harness to carry your car to the grocery store to pick up some lard vs. pushing it.

I've read Haack's paper before, and she's one of the few academics that seems to realize the horror of academic publishing. So why does everybody keep feeding the monster? You lose all rights to your work for the nebulous prospect of getting tenure or some other academic achievement. And then your ideas that you supplied for free are now sold to the highest bidder and you get zilch

Keyword "reviewing" that means we dumped it in the wastebasket and hope this will go away. In the meantime, it's open season on any sites that have been approved for demolition. That is until the next site get's blown-up. After that it will move another rung up the bureaucratic ladder.
