They are quite common in the Middle Kingdom, as can be seen in the pyramid complexes of Khendjer and the Southern South Saqqara pyramid, or the residential area of Qsar el-Sagha, and even at Abydos. There is not much research on them, though this article appears the most detailed so far, though l have lost my internet link to it.
