I've seen one explanation that has them being to keep sand out of houses, but I would think this wavy pattern would cause sand to accumulate, and if that were the reason, this type of design would be very very common, but I still cannot find anything. It looks decorative, but so unique that there must be some specific purpose for this design. Looking at more and better video I'm trying to imagine what it would have looked like when occupied, and I think a walk down that street between those walls would have been sort of an odd experience, and maybe not one try when drunk when you are swaying about and the walls and coming in and out and in and out, blech..
