The ancestor of the pyramids, the mastaba of Nebetka, vizier to Pharaoh Den (Ist dynasty, 3,050 B.C.) Discovered during the autumn by British archeologist Walter Emery, this monument announced through its architectural style the stepped structure which the architect Imhotep would use three centuries later in the pyramid dedicated to Djoser

The mastaba contained no ”locally quarried stone”, nor was it “”faced with dressed limestone”; rather it was constructed of sand, gravel, and mud brick.
