Hi Kanga, Hermione,
In the paper, I have quoted a date of approximately 1550 BCE which was taken directly from the The British Museum here: [
www.britishmuseum.org] . However, I can see that in Richard J. Gillings, Mathematics in the time of the Pharaohs, p 45 gives a date of approximately 1650 BCE and also acknowledges that it contains writing that it is a copy of a document, which Gillings says comes from about 200 years earlier. As such, there is some validity in arguing an older date for the mathematics.
There is a similar ambiguity on dates regardingthe Karnak Clepsydra, according to Clagett Ancient Egyptian Science Vol IIp66 it indeed dates to 1391 BCE - 1353 BCE but analysis of the scales and their placement on the inner edge shows that this clock was copied from an earlier clock built 100 years prior so circa 1450 BCE (p68 of Clagett). I will update my paper as its not quite as contemporary as I was thinking but it is still relatively close.
Regards,
Brendan
