If there is a hole then it's 1 1/4" and was likely drilled in 2016 or 2017 before the scientists offered to fly a balloon inside. They probably already have pictures of the inside taken from an endoscope so they know there's enough room for it. There's probably nothing that upsets current beliefs in it or they wouldn't have announced it. It's probably not very interesting or the news would be much different. If it were obviously important like part of a system of passages then they would put the detection equipment in the "grand gallery". It was probably done from one of the lower "relieving chambers" and done by Hawass et al. They wouldda used electric drills and short bits in all probability.
It would be far more interesting to know what they have done with the thermal anomalies and why they aren't announcing more tests here. They OBVIOUSLY "drilled" into this area and inserted an endoscope (boroscope) and left the guide in the hole along with debris and trash. This is based on the fact that Hawass announced in 2019 that there is natural rock behind the anomaly as well as a large fissure. At the very least no fissure is visible from the outside implying one is from inside.
There are continual and ongoing updates about the relatively boring muon scanning but nothing at all except several slips about the thermal anomalies. The last word on them was 2016 when it was announced a year long study was going to gather data for computer manipulation. That study should have been completed in its entirety about July 2017. I can assure you that a great deal of important data exists from this and it might never be seen by most living Egyptologists. It does not reflect current beliefs and the data can not be readily explained in terms of those beliefs. like all other data it will show horizontal and vertical lines of "anomalies". This is probably because all forces and processes involved in the construction of the great pyramids occurred in the horizontal and vertical planes. Muon scanning will not turn up Khufu's actual burial place because Khufu most probably was never buried at all. Of course we'll know more in the autumn when the data are released but anyone expecting a bombshell of any nature is in for a huge disappointment.
