The Soviet political system defined historical scholarship as one of the types of
intellectual front on which Soviet scholars fought against bourgeois
historiography (and at the same time against traitors in their own
sphere). Obviously, the history of the ancient world was not the
vanguard of this fight, therefore, ideological influence in this
sphere was lesser. Nevertheless, the Marxist paradigm sought a
holistic understanding of history; therefore, without an image of
ancient history, the puzzle could not come together.
