I loved the movie too but any resemblance to real events was purely coincidental.

Rudolph had rotten heredity, no less than three of his grandparents were Wittlebachs (the royal family of Bavaria). His cousins King Ludwig II and King Otto of Bavaria were totally mental (the latter literally barking mad - poor man) and his mother had HUGE problems including OCD behaviors, anorexia nervosa, possible bulimia, magical thinking and severe narcissism (it was always all about her). She couldn't take the high pressure, structured world of 19th c. royalty and neither could her son.
