I suspect that many of the problems experience by European royalty were the result of rather too frequent intermarriages with other European royal families, who might be close relatives ... with disastrous results (Wiki on inbreeding (scroll down to "House of Habsburg")). Often, the royal couples didn't get on, and their children were prone to leading problematic lives.
