You are correct the excuses seem worse than the reality.
Imagine the English royal house in 1888 stating for the record "<Made up> prince was not actually gay; he dressed up in woman's clothing before going out at night because he was Jack the Ripper!" Right, the excuse is 3 times worse than the real offense.
Personally I suspect what the Hapsburgs really feared was the idea their genes had started to produce insanity. There was far too much inbreeding in all the royal houses in those centuries.
And the sin of smearing his victim's reputation is still far too common when someone of power & influence gets caught being the villain.
If we think this behavior is in our recent past & contemplate the Kennedy Family antics for one example...
