I'm not usually impressed by TV shows recreating historical events, however, The Last Kingdom is remarkably good.
It is the story of Alfred the Great, Edward the Elder and Æthelstan and their fight against the Danes and the struggle to create a united England. It's absolutely fascinating, it's based a lot on the Anglo Saxon Chronicles. It's too bad we don't have more of this quality of production.
I may have to dig up the book series this is based on and read them.
