Background:

Last year, an Egyptologist friend told us that he had completely
photographed the two volumes " Staat aus dem Stein" in order
to be able to use them at any time. To our surprise, we then
discovered that even after almost 100 years, the books can
still be found on lists of basic Egyptological literature,
and that they can only be purchased at a very high price.
This gave rise to the idea of making them available digitally.
The Bruckmann Verlag kindly agreed to this immediately.

At the same time, a new interest in our father has emerged in
art sience by exploring the history of the own science. For
example, the Technical University of Darmstadt has launched
a research project on 150 years of art history in Darmstadt,
which – due to corona – concluded in an online symposium.

After his Egyptological researches under the direction of
Hermann Ranke, our father switched to art history and was
then from 1950 to 1968 professor at the TH Darmstadt in the
Department of Architecture. As the only representative
of art history, he was able to speak about art from
prehistory to modernity and from painting to engineering
buildings in turns of several years. This suited his
wide-ranging interests very well.

Egyptology has always remained a central anchor of his
thinking. "What would Cheops say about this" was one of
the questions with which he tried to classify completely
different phenomena in completely different times.

Based on his Egyptian experience as an art photographer,
he also built up one of the largest art-historical slide
collections in the German-speaking world in Darmstadt
during this time. A digitization of this stock is currently
being planned in Darmstadt.

He was connected with the cultural life of the city of Darmstadt
in many ways and, among other things, played a major role in
shaping the “Darmstädter Gespräche”, which can be regarded as
a new beginning of controversial debate culture after the war
and which can be regarded as precursors of today's talk shows.

It is wonderful if the books "Staat aus dem Stein" continue
to be used, and we would be pleased if you make the information
available to other interested persons.

Best regards,
