Detailed program

"The Archaeological Preservation in Museums in the Past and Present"

A Symposium to activate the archaeological cooperation between
Egypt and Japan

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ministry of state for Antiquities is launching the Second Symposium
of the GEM Restoration and Documentation Center on Monday 18th
March under the title "The Archaeological Preservation in Museums in
the Past and Present". The symposium discusses the activation of the
scientific and cultural cooperation between Egypt and Japan. It also
introduces the Restoration and Documentation Center and its activities.

The Foreign archaeological institutes in Egypt will participate in the
symposium that will be held in two days besides many worldwide
Egyptologists, JIKA Members and representatives of the embassy
of Japan in Egypt.

Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim, the Minister of state for Antiquities declares
that the symposium aims at re-presenting the cultural and archaeological
collaboration between the two sides; the Egyptian and the Japanese. It
also clarifies the importance of the Restoration and Documentation
Center and its position as one of the most important scientific extensions
of the museum. The Center was officially inaugurated in June 2010
and it has performed many activities and achievements in the last year
concerning the restoration process of the artifacts that will be displayed
in the Grand Egyptian Museum.

On the other hand, Dr. Hussein Abdel Basir , GEM Supervisor said
that in spite the fact that Egypt owes the principle abilities to manage
and restore the artifacts at the Center however it was necessary to
develop the knowledge and skills to restore those artifacts that were
negatively influenced due to the old means of preservation, restoration
and maintenance. Therefore, in collaboration with the Egyptian side,
JIKA held many training programs in both Egypt and Japan in order
to raise the team work's skills and abilities .

The Restoration Center's First Symposium that was held in February
of the last year discussed the cooperation means with JIKA.
