On Wednesday, 13 March 2013, Francis Joannès, Professor of Ancient
History, Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Director of the
Unité Archéologie et Sciences de l'Antiquité et Histoire et
Archéologie de l'Orient Cunéiforme at the CNRS, will give a lecture
for the Canadian Society for Mesopotamian Studies.
First Millennium BC Babylonia has yielded numerous archives of
cuneiform tablets stemming from private families and also from larger
administrative units such as temples. With their help it is possible
to reconstruct a cohesive picture of family life, and in particular of
the role of women in the household economy. The present lecture wil
present a survey of this evidence and trace a new portrait of the life
and economic role of women in late Babylonian society on the basis of
this rich written record.
This free public lecture is at 8:00 pm in Earth Sciences Auditorium
B142, 5 Bancroft Avenue, University of Toronto, St. George Campus.
