This question came up at Quora and its not an area I have any expertise in:

The initial question was: "What is the 1955 citation for the archaeological discovery of Roman artifacts near Mali, evidencing the expedition of Cornelius Balbus in 19 BCE?"

A further comment by the writer.

"I have found a second hand statement about the artifacts (Roman coins found in northern Mali) supposedly claimed to have been made by Jonathan Roth, Professor at San Jose State University. But I can’t find any reference to the original archaeological work, and Professor Roth hasn’t replied to my inquiry. I’m thinking the field work might have been British."



Any ideas?
